Have you ever felt the urge to escape from bustling city life for a while without having to travel vast distances from home? Of course you have! We’ve discovered a hidden gem of a hotel, the Tilal Liwa, that we enjoyed so much. I almost don’t want to reveal our secret– almost.
Long weekends in the UAE are made for Staycations – or is that the other way around? Located in the heart of the untouched sandy dunes of Abu Dhabi, Tilal Liwa Hotel is an oasis straight out of an Arabian Nights movie. We booked our Cobone voucher for one night half board, packed up the car and were set driving through the long, winding road (on what felt like the windiest day in history) for the UAE National Day long weekend.
P.S. – If you feel like you are lost in the middle of nowhere about half way in, you’re on the right path! It took us just over three hours to reach the hotel from Dubai. Make sure to fill up your tank before you leave the highway and travel during the day if possible as there are no street lights for a few kilometers of the journey. When in doubt, one quick phone call to the very helpful and patient hotel concierge will guide you in no time.
We were greeted by the gorgeous aroma of Oud as we entered through the grand entrance doors. The staff immediately met us with warm and welcoming smiles and after swift check in procedures, we were shown to our lovely room for the night. The courtyard facing room felt very cosy and with hints of traditional Arabian décor scattered throughout, it was perfectly quaint, clean and very comfortable. We made a note upon check in to receive a cot for Alex which was promptly set up before we could finish our coffee. We then changed into our swimming gear and headed for the pièce de résistance, the lavish pool.
Now, when I say that this is the thing that bloggers dream of, I mean that I must have taken about 100 photos of this area alone. The infinity pool seemingly melts into the dunes ahead, arched by the signature teardrop architecture. It was (thankfully) heated so all four of us waded in the water and watched the sun set over the golden sands. There is also a lovely play area for the kids/kids at heart with a large netted trampoline and foosball tables to keep the littlies occupied while relaxing poolside.
Dinner time was very much welcomed after our exciting day of road tripping and photographing. As a keen carnivore, I must give two thumbs up to the meat dishes in the buffet– the grilled pheasant being top of the list. The salad bar was well stocked, the roast tender and juicy and a dessert selection that would please Marie Antoinette.
We all had a great night’s sleep. and were eagerly anticipating breakfast the next morning. We love a hotel breakfast buffet. The hotel chefs prepared eggs, freshly flipped pancakes and waffles at live cooking stations. There is also a buffet featuring cereals, yoghurt, fruits and hot dishes.
We filled our bellies up and took a walk through the courtyard to explore the rest of the grounds.
We discovered a quaint majlis area, beside the hotel, in front of a garden oasis. This was an amazing photo opportunity spot. The hotel offers four wheel hire, sand boarding and camel rides. Great for those looking for a more adventurous stay. We nicknamed their resident camel Henry and we hope that he was a male camel!
We left Tilal Liwa feeling completely refreshed and relaxed like only a hotel in the middle of the desert can. This hotel is definitely one for the bucket list and perfect for friends or family that want to experience traditional Arabian hospitality. It really exceeded all of our expectations. We left with priceless memories in our hearts and smiles on our faces.
